How to Prepare for Your Maternity Photo Session in Pittsburgh

There's something truly magical about the season of expecting — and maternity portraits are one of the most beautiful ways to honor it. Whether this is your first pregnancy or you're adding to your growing family, a little preparation will help you feel comfortable, beautiful, and completely at ease in front of the camera. As a Pittsburgh maternity and family photographer, I've had the privilege of documenting this incredible milestone for families all across the Pittsburgh area — and I want your experience to be everything you hoped for.

Here's everything you need to know to prepare for your maternity photo session.

When to Schedule Your Maternity Session

Timing is everything when it comes to maternity portraits. The sweet spot for most mamas is between 28 and 36 weeks — your bump is beautifully round and prominent, but you're still feeling comfortable enough to move around and enjoy the session.

I recommend booking your Pittsburgh maternity session early in your second trimester, even if your actual shoot will be later. Maternity sessions fill up quickly, and you don't want to be scrambling to find a photographer in your third trimester. If you're also considering newborn photos, many photographers offer maternity and newborn bundles — booking both at once ensures you're covered for both milestones.

What to Wear for Your Maternity Session

This is the question I get asked most often, and it's a great one. What you wear has an enormous impact on how your photos feel and how confident you look.

Flowy gowns and form-fitting dresses are both wonderful options. Long, flowing dresses in soft fabrics photograph beautifully outdoors and give portraits an elegant, timeless feel. Form-fitting options that gently hug your bump can look stunning too — especially if you want to really celebrate and show off your growing belly.

Neutrals, soft blush tones, and earth tones tend to work especially well in Pittsburgh's lush parks and natural settings. Avoid large logos, bold graphics, or very busy patterns that can distract from you and your bump.

Consider wardrobe options for your partner and kids. If your partner or other children are joining the session, coordinate — but don't match exactly. Complementary colors in the same tonal family photograph beautifully and look cohesive without looking costume-y.

Consider gown rentals. Many maternity photographers offer client closets so you don't have to stress about finding the perfect dress. There are also independent businesses on Etsy that rent gowns!

Choose a Location That Feels Like You

Pittsburgh offers some truly stunning backdrops for maternity portraits. A few favorites include:

  • Hartwood Acres Park — sprawling grounds and gorgeous architecture

  • South Park — wooded paths, open meadows, and beautiful light

  • North Park — peaceful lakeside settings and lush greenery

  • Frick Park — natural, forested atmosphere perfect for intimate portraits

  • Your own home or backyard — intimate and personal, especially meaningful for in-home lifestyle maternity sessions

There's no wrong answer when it comes to location. The best setting is one that feels meaningful to you and your family. If you have a special place in mind, let's talk about it — I love incorporating personal locations into Pittsburgh maternity sessions. If you don't want to worry about it, I'm happy to choose a location for you as well.

How to Feel Your Best on Session Day

Pregnancy is beautiful, but it can also be exhausting. Here's how to set yourself up for a session you'll genuinely enjoy:

Rest the night before. Try to get a full night of sleep before your session. You deserve to feel your best!

Eat a light meal and stay hydrated. An empty stomach makes it hard to relax and smile comfortably. Have a light snack or meal an hour or so before your session, and bring water with you.

Schedule your session for your best time of day. If you're an exhausted morning person, don't book a sunrise session. If you always feel most energized in the afternoon, let's plan accordingly. I want you feeling your best when we meet.

Do your hair and makeup in a way that feels like you. You don't need to hire a glam squad (though you absolutely can!), but a little extra effort makes a big difference. Soft, polished makeup photographs beautifully — and if full makeup isn't your thing, even just a tinted moisturizer and a little mascara can make you feel more camera-ready.

Wear your compression socks or support belt on the drive over. Comfort on the way to your session means you'll arrive relaxed and ready instead of achy and tired.

If you're taking outdoor photos in winter, make sure to bring a coat and hand warmers to warm up between shots.

Bring the Details That Matter

Maternity portraits are about so much more than the bump — they're about your story. Consider bringing:

  • Ultrasound photos to incorporate into detail shots

  • A meaningful piece of jewelry or an heirloom item

  • Baby shoes, a special outfit, or a name sign if you've chosen one

  • Your older children's favorite stuffed animal or toy if they're joining the session

These small touches add so much heart to a maternity gallery and make the images feel deeply personal.

What to Expect During Your Session

If you've never done a professional photo session before — or if pregnancy has you feeling a little self-conscious — I want you to know: you are going to look incredible. My entire job is to help you feel comfortable, guide you into poses that are flattering and natural, and capture the genuine emotion of this season of your life. Also, the pregnancy glow is so real!

We'll move at your pace. If you need to rest, we rest. If something doesn't feel comfortable, we adjust. Maternity sessions should feel like a celebration, not a chore — and I'll do everything I can to make sure yours feels exactly that way.

Sessions typically last 60 to 90 minutes, and we'll work through a variety of poses — solo portraits of you, couples portraits with your partner, and family portraits if you have other little ones joining in.
