As a family photographer serving the greater Pittsburgh area, I know that what you wear plays a massive role in how your final images feel. When aiming for a warm, film-inspired portrait aesthetic, your wardrobe choices can elevate a picture from a standard photo to a timeless piece of art.

Instead of picking one single color for everyone to wear, choose a cohesive palette of 3 to 4 complementary tones.

• Embrace Earthy Tones: For a warm and rich editing style (like mine!), earth tones work beautifully. Think rust, amber, olive green, mustard yellow, deep cream, and rich denim.

• If you're not an earthy tone kind of family - blues and neutrals is another easy to do color pallette that always looks good. Some light blues, some darker blues, cream or white and khakis. Just make to vary texture and pattern with this one!

• The Anchor Strategy: Start by picking one person’s outfit that features a subtle pattern or a beautiful color blend—often mom’s dress is the perfect starting point! From there, pull individual colors from that main outfit to dictate what the rest of the family wears in solid tones.

Blues and neutrals are always a hit.

2. Layer with Deep Textures

When you move away from matching patterns, texture becomes your absolute best friend. Textures absorb and reflect light differently, adding an incredible sense of depth and luxury to your portraits.

Instead of plain cotton t-shirts, mix and match different fabrics across your family members. Think about incorporating:

• Rich denims or corduroy

• Flowing linens and muslins

• Lace details or ribbed cotton

Hats cast heavy, unpredictable shadows across your eyes and face, hiding your expressions from the camera and making it difficult to capture those authentic, bright-eyed interactions. We want to see your beautiful faces, unobstructed!

4. Wardrobe Pitfalls to Avoid

To ensure your family remains the true focus of the photos rather than your clothes, keep these classic wardrobe "don'ts" in mind:

• Say No to Tiny Checkers and Stripes: Very small, tight patterns (like micro-gingham or thin pinstripes) cause a digital distortion called moiré. It creates a strange, dizzying wavy pattern in camera lenses that is nearly impossible to fix in editing.

• Avoid Loud, Large Patterns: Giant floral prints, bold geometric shapes, or neon colors will completely overwhelm a natural background. Whether we are shooting in a lush, green park in the South Hills or a rustic setting in Allegheny County, we want the background to frame you, not compete with you.

• Steer Clear of Graphic Logos: Characters, large brand logos, or text on shirts immediately date an image and distract the eye.
