How to Prepare Your Kids for Family Photos

A little preparation goes a long way!

As a South Hills family photographer (and a mom of two myself!), I know how intimidating family photo day can feel, especially when little ones are involved. But here’s the good news: with just a little prep, your kids can have fun and feel comfortable, and you’ll walk away with photos that reflect the love and personality of your family.

Here are my top tips for how to prepare your kids for family photos, so the day feels smooth, joyful, and stress-free:

1. Talk It Up Like an Adventure

A few days before your session, start building some positive anticipation. Tell your kids you’re going to meet a friend who takes fun pictures and that you’ll all get to play and laugh together. Keep it light and exciting, not something to be nervous about.

2. Pick Comfortable Outfits

Let’s face it: if something itches, pinches, or is stiff, your child will let you (and the camera) know. Make sure their outfit fits well and feels good: soft fabrics and layers they can move in are best. Letting older kids help choose their outfit can also help them feel more confident and involved. Comfort includes temperatures - if it's going to be cold, layer them up and bring coats for in between locations. If it's going to be hot, skip the long sleeves and layers.

3. Bring a Favorite Snack or Treat for Littles

Having a few mess-free snacks on hand can work wonders. Think small, quick bites like mini marshmallows or puffs. I love mini marshmallows because they are white and can blend in easily with teeth if necessary! You can also let them know a post-session treat is coming (hello, ice cream run). I'm all about taking breaks during a session if needed.

4. Get Plenty of Rest

A well-rested kid is a happier kid. Try to schedule your session around nap times or when your child is typically at their best. Scheduling tip: If your child has an earlier bedtime it can be hard to get that late golden hour glow in the summer, but it becomes more accessible in the fall as the sun sets earlier.

5. Arrive Early & Stay Calm

Give yourself extra time to arrive, park, and get settled, especially if your session is in a new or unfamiliar location. Rushing adds stress, and kids can feel that energy. If you’re calm and relaxed, they’ll take their cues from you.

6. Trust the Process

Kids don’t need to be perfectly posed to get beautiful, meaningful photos. Some of the best images come when they’re being themselves: snuggling with you, laughing, twirling, or even taking a quiet moment. I always allow space for little personalities to shine and adjust my approach based on your child’s energy.

7. Let Go of Perfection

The goal isn’t a flawless posed portrait, it’s capturing your real, loving family just as you are in this season. Let go of expectations, go with the flow, and I promise: we’ll create magic.

Family photos with kids don’t have to be stressful. With a little preparation and the right mindset, it can actually be a fun and memorable experience for everyone. If you’re looking for a family photographer in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, I’d love to help you turn this special time into lasting memories: kids, giggles, and all!
