The Best Parks and Locations for Family Photos in Pittsburgh

One of the things I love most about photographing families in the Pittsburgh area is that we are absolutely spoiled for beautiful backdrops. From lush county parks and wooded trails to iconic city skylines and charming historic landmarks, the greater Pittsburgh region offers an incredible variety of settings for outdoor family portraits. Whether you're looking for something natural and woodsy, something with a little urban edge, or something with a truly unique wow factor, there's a location here that's perfect for your family.
Here's a guide to some of my favorite spots for family photos in and around Pittsburgh — including a few hidden gems south of the city that are especially close to home for families in the South Hills and Washington County area.
South Park — South Hills Families' Best Kept Secret
If you live in the South Hills, Bethel Park, or surrounding communities, South Park is a 2,013-acre county park located about 15 miles south of downtown Pittsburgh — and it is absolutely stunning for family portraits. With miles of wooded trails, open meadows, picnic groves, and beautiful natural light filtering through the trees, South Park offers incredible variety all within one location.
What makes South Park especially great for families is that it never feels the same twice. In the fall, the foliage is breathtaking — golden and amber tones that make every photo feel warm and rich. In the spring and summer, the greenery is lush and full. It's a park I return to often, and there's always a new angle or a new pocket of light to discover.
It's also wonderfully practical — plenty of parking, open space for kids to run around between shots, and a relaxed atmosphere that helps families settle in and feel comfortable before the session really gets going.

Mingo Creek County Park — A Hidden Gem for South of Pittsburgh Families
If you haven't been to Mingo Creek, you are in for a treat. This 2,600-acre park is located in Finleyville, PA, about 30 miles south of Pittsburgh, and it is one of the most photogenic locations in the entire region — and somehow still feels like a local secret.
Mingo Creek has great trails passing through wooded areas with a paved trail along the creek, offering a beautiful mix of open and forested settings depending on the mood you're going for. The creek itself provides a gorgeous natural backdrop, and the wooded atmosphere gives portraits a soft, organic quality that families absolutely love.
Families with young kids will also be happy to know the park has excellent playgrounds, which makes a great spot for candid, in-the-moment shots of kids just being kids.
For families in the South Hills, Peters Township, Canonsburg, or Washington County area, Mingo Creek is incredibly convenient — and the photos that come out of it look anything but ordinary.

Schenley Park — A Pittsburgh Classic
Located in the heart of Pittsburgh near Oakland and Squirrel Hill, Schenley Park is one of the city's most beloved green spaces — and a perennial favorite for family portrait sessions. The park offers wooded walking paths, open grassy areas, and beautiful stone bridges and architectural details that add texture and interest to portraits.
Schenley is a great all-season location. The tree canopy in fall is spectacular, and in spring and summer the park bursts with greenery. It's also a wonderful option for families who want that "in the city but surrounded by nature" feel.
Frick Park — Wooded, Natural, and Gorgeous
For families who want something a little more wild and natural, Frick Park in Point Breeze is hard to beat. Pittsburgh's largest municipal park has a deeply forested atmosphere that feels far removed from the city, even though it's right in the middle of it. The dappled light through the trees creates a soft, natural look that's especially beautiful in the warmer months.
Frick Park tends to work particularly well for families who want relaxed, candid portraits — there's plenty of room to wander, explore, and let kids lead the way, which often yields the most authentic and heartfelt photos of all.
North Park — A Beautiful Option for North Side Families
Located in Allison Park on the north side of Pittsburgh, North Park is another Allegheny County gem that offers a lakeside setting, wooded trails, and open lawns. The lake provides a gorgeous backdrop for portraits, and the variety of settings within the park means there's something for every family's style.
North Park tends to be a favorite for spring and summer sessions, when the surrounding greenery is at its most vibrant and the light reflecting off the water adds a beautiful, airy quality to portraits.
Point State Park — For That Iconic Pittsburgh Skyline Shot
Sometimes you want the city itself to be part of the story. Point State Park, where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers meet to form the Ohio, offers one of the most recognizable views in Pittsburgh. The skyline as a backdrop gives family portraits a sense of place that's uniquely Pittsburgh — perfect for families who are proud of their city and want that to show in their photos.
Sessions at Point State Park tend to work especially well at golden hour, when the light is warm and the city glows behind your family.
Your Own Neighborhood or Backyard
Don't underestimate the power of a meaningful, personal location. Some of the most special family portraits I've created have been in people's own backyards, on their front porch, or in a neighborhood that holds significance to their family. If there's a place that means something to you — a park where your kids always play, a street corner that feels like home — that can absolutely be the backdrop for your session.
The location matters less than the connection you feel to it.

How to Choose the Right Location for Your Family
Not sure which location is right for you? Here are a few questions to help narrow it down:
Where do you live? If you're in the South Hills or Washington County area, South Park or Mingo Creek will feel easy and local. If you're in the East End, Frick Park or Schenley makes more sense. Choosing a location close to home means less travel stress — especially with young kids in tow.
What vibe are you going for? Woodsy and natural? Frick Park or Mingo Creek. Open and airy? North Park or South Park. Urban and bold? Point State Park.
What time of year is your session? Fall sessions are stunning almost anywhere in Pittsburgh, but locations with heavy tree canopy — like Frick Park or Schenley — are especially magical. Spring sessions shine in North Park and South Park. Winter sessions can work beautifully anywhere with interesting architecture or structure.
When you book your session with me, we'll talk through all of this together and choose a location that feels just right for your family. I love helping families find their perfect spot.
