What to Expect at Your Family Session

Booked your family photo session and wondering what actually happens when you show up? I get it. Walking into something new can feel a little nerve-wracking.
As a Pittsburgh family photographer, I want you to know exactly what to expect so you can relax and enjoy the experience. Here's how a typical session with me goes.
We'll Start with a Quick Hello
When you arrive, we'll take a minute to say hi and get comfortable. I'll chat with your kids, ask about their favorite things, and just help everyone settle in.
This isn't a formal thing. We're just getting to know each other for a minute before we start shooting.
If you have any questions or concerns before we begin, this is a great time to mention them.

Some Gentle Posing to Start
We'll start with a few posed family shots. But don't worry, I'm not going to make you stand stiff and awkward.
I'll give you gentle direction on where to stand, how to hold your kids, or where to look. Think of it more like guided suggestions than strict poses.
The goal is to get everyone looking good together without it feeling forced or unnatural.
Then We'll Get Moving
Once we have a few traditional shots, we'll shift into more movement and play. This is where the real magic happens.
I'll have you walk together, spin your kids around, tickle them, or just interact naturally. These moments usually produce the best photos.
For younger kids, we might play games like "find the leaf" or "race to the tree." Anything that gets them moving and laughing.

I'll Work with Your Kids
If you have little ones, I'll do my best to connect with them and make this fun. I use silly voices, make up games, and act ridiculous if that's what it takes to get a smile.
Some kids warm up right away. Others need a few minutes. I'll read their energy and adjust how I interact with them.
And if they need a snack break or a minute to run around, we'll take it. No pressure, no rush.

Expect Some Direction for Parents Too
I'll give you cues throughout the session. Things like "pull them in closer" or "look at each other instead of me" or "tickle him right there."
This helps you know what to do with your hands, where to focus, and how to interact naturally.
You don't need to worry about posing yourself. I'll guide you through it.
We'll Mix Posed and Candid Shots
You'll get a mix of both in your gallery. Some photos where everyone is looking at the camera and smiling. And some where you're just being together.
Both types are important. The posed shots are great for your wall or holiday cards. The candid moments capture your family's real personality.

I'll Keep Things Light and Fun
My goal is for this to feel more like hanging out than a formal photo shoot. I want you to laugh, play with your kids, and actually enjoy this time together.
The more relaxed you are, the better your photos will be. So I do everything I can to keep the vibe easy and stress-free.
What If Things Don't Go Perfectly?
Sometimes kids cry. Sometimes toddlers refuse to cooperate. Sometimes someone's hair gets messy or a shoe falls off.
That's all normal. We'll work through it together.
I'm not expecting perfection. I'm expecting real life. And real life is messy and beautiful and exactly what makes great family photos.
How Long Will It Take?
For mini sessions, we have 20 focused minutes. We move quickly but still get beautiful shots.
For full sessions, we have up to 60 minutes. This gives us time for breaks, outfit changes, or just slowing down when we need to.
Either way, I'll make the most of our time together.
What Happens After the Session?
Once we're done shooting, you're free to go. I'll take all the photos home and start editing.
You'll receive your gallery within 14 business days. I'll send you a link to view and download your images.
Then you can enjoy your photos, print them, share them, and remember this stage of your family forever.

Tips to Make Your Session Even Better
Here are a few things that help sessions go smoothly:
Show up a few minutes early. This gives us time to settle in without feeling rushed.
Bring snacks and water. Especially for little kids who might need a quick break.
Don't stress about perfection. Your goal is to be present with your family, not to look perfect.
Trust the process. I've done this a lot. I know how to help you get great photos.
Have fun. Seriously. The families who relax and enjoy themselves always get the best results.
The Bottom Line
A family photo session with me is relaxed, fun, and focused on capturing who you really are. You'll get some posed shots and lots of candid moments. And most importantly, you'll walk away with photos that make you smile every time you see them.
