Tips from a Pittsburgh Family Photographer
As a Pittsburgh family photographer (and a mom!), I know how important it is to capture the little everyday moments with your kids, especially when they’re growing and changing so quickly. Whether you’re using a fancy camera or just your phone, you can absolutely take sweet, frame-worthy photos at home. Here are my best tips to help you capture natural, beautiful pictures of your kids that you’ll actually want to print.
1. Find Good Light
Lighting makes all the difference. Natural light is your best friend, especially soft window light or open shade outside. Turn off overhead lights, face your child toward the window, and avoid harsh midday sun outdoors.

Pro tip: Overcast days are great for shooting outside, no harsh shadows! Luckily we have lots of those here in Pittsburgh.
2. Get on Their Level
Instead of shooting from above, try kneeling or sitting so you’re eye-level with your child. This creates more engaging, intimate photos that show the world from their point of view.

3. Capture Candid Moments
You don’t need forced smiles to get great shots. Let them play, explore, or snuggle a favorite stuffed animal. Candid, in-between moments often show the most genuine personality, and those are the ones you’ll treasure most.

4. Keep It Simple
Busy backgrounds and clutter can distract from the moment. Try shooting in front of a plain wall, a bed with a simple blanket, or outside in nature. Minimalism lets your child be the focus of the photo.

5. Use Burst Mode or Live Photos
Kids move fast! Use burst mode to snap a bunch of frames at once, you’re more likely to catch the perfect expression. If you’re using an iPhone, Live Photos can be a lifesaver for finding that one sweet frame in a blink-and-you-missed-it moment.

Capture the Little Details
Those precious tiny little fingers and toes get bigger all too quickly and make some of the most beautiful pictures! Try taking pictures of a lock of hair, the way they hold your hand, or a dimple: all of these will evoke tender memories later on.

7. Don’t Stress About “Perfect”
Some of the best photos are a little messy, windblown hair, belly laughs, muddy shoes. Real is beautiful. Don’t worry if they aren’t looking at the camera or sitting still. The goal is to capture them, just as they are.
Bonus: Be Present
Remember, you should be in the photo sometimes too. Set a timer or hand the phone off to your partner. These moments matter, and you’re part of them.

Of course, there's something extra special about having professional photos taken. If you're looking for family photography in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, I’d love to help you capture this season in a way that feels relaxed, meaningful, and totally “you.” Send me a message and we'll get your session on the calendar.
In the meantime, I hope these tips help you slow down, enjoy the moment, and snap a few more beautiful memories with your little ones. 💛
