What to Expect During an In-Home Newborn Session (And Why the Chaos is Welcome!)

At a Glance: What is an In-Home Lifestyle Newborn Session?

An in-home newborn session is a relaxed, unhurried photo shoot held in the comfort of your living space. Sessions typically take place mid-morning or early afternoon using indirect natural window light. They prioritize baby's needs—including plenty of time for feedings and soothing—while capturing gentle, authentic family interactions without strict studio posing.

Bringing home a new baby is one of the most magical times in your life—and let’s be honest, it is also one of the most wonderfully exhausting. The last thing any brand-new parent wants to do is pack up a giant diaper bag, bundle up a tiny newborn, and rush out the door to a studio.

That is exactly why in-home newborn sessions are such a favorite for families across the South Hills. Your home is the backdrop of your baby’s earliest story. It’s where you snuggle on the couch, feed in the quiet moments, and welcome older siblings into their new roles.

If you're wondering how an in-home session actually works (and worrying if your house is "ready"), here is a peek behind the curtain of what to expect!

1. Timing & Light: Mid-Morning to Early Afternoon Magic

We typically schedule in-home lifestyle sessions during mid-morning or early afternoon. This is when window light is abundant, but the sun isn't beaming directly through your glass, which avoids harsh shadows or bright glares.

When I arrive, I will turn off all artificial overhead lights and lamps. It might feel counterintuitive at first, but mixing lamps with natural sunlight creates competing color tones in photographs (making skin tones look orange or blue). By relying purely on natural sun, your images turn out soft, warm, and timeless.

Note: With your permission, I may gently shift a piece of furniture around—like sliding an armchair closer to a sunlit window or moving a side table—to make sure we catch the dreamiest light available!

2. Interactive Prompts & Keeping Siblings Engaged

If you have toddlers or older children, you might be nervous about how they will behave. Please don't be! I use play-based prompts to keep big brothers and sisters engaged and giggling naturally. We follow your children’s lead rather than forcing them to sit still and stare at a camera.

I guide your family through a blend of gentle posing direction and interactive prompts (like snuggly couch cuddles, whispering a secret to baby, or smelling baby’s tiny toes). You get to focus on interacting naturally with your people while looking beautiful and connected.

3. Embracing the "Beautiful Chaos"

I am going to let you in on a secret: MOST of my photo sessions feel a little bit chaotic in the moment!

A toddler might jump on the bed, a baby might need an urgent diaper change, or someone might throw a minor tantrum. That is 100% normal. As a mom of two, capturing the honest, beautiful chaos of a young family is what I am all about. You take a deep breath and relax—I promise you won't see a hint of stress in your final gallery, only pure connection and love.

4. Front & Back Porch Snaps

If Western PA grants us lovely weather on the day of your shoot, we might step out onto your front porch, back deck, or garden area for a few minutes. Fresh air and quiet outdoor light offer a gorgeous change of scenery right at your doorstep!

Frequently Asked Questions About In-Home Sessions

How much do I need to clean before an in-home session?

Just a quick tidy-up of the main rooms we’ll be photographing (usually the main bedroom, nursery, or living room) is all we need! Clear the nightstands and toss clutter into a laundry basket in another room. I do not care if your sink is full of dishes! I have two kids myself—nobody needs to be deep-cleaning their house when they have a newborn baby.

What if my house is dark?

You don't need a sprawling home full of floor-to-ceiling windows to get beautiful portraits! All we need is ONE good window with bright indirect light. As a photographer, I know how to locate and maximize subtle light pockets in any home setup. However, you know your home best and if you feel it really is too dark we can discuss other options for locations.

What if I need to feed or soothe the baby during the shoot?

Take all the time you need! I always schedule newborn sessions for 2 full hours specifically so there is zero stress. We take plenty of breaks for nurse/bottle feedings, diaper changes, and burping. There is never any rush!

Are in-home sessions ONLY for newborns?

Not at all! While my preference is outdoor photography when the weather is nice, an in-home session might be just right for your family. They are especially lovely during cold winter months when we don't want to be outside anyway!
